Setting the Notation Key

SET THE NOTATION KEY FIRST

When Riff Lab first loads, the notation area is blank until you either add a prebuilt riff or create one of your own. If you’re starting from scratch, it’s a good idea to start by setting the notation key and then loading a matching fretboard display. For example, lets say I need to spend some time in the woodshed practicing the C minor scale. If so, I could open Scale Mate, set the notation key to C minor and then go down to the fretboard and load the C minor scale in the Fretboard Display setting.

MATCH THE NOTATION KEY TO THE FRETBOARD DISPLAY

Matching the notation key to the fretboard display as close as possible keeps things cleaner because, as you click to add notes from the fretboard, the notation doesn’t get cluttered with sharps or flats because, in most cases, the notes you add from the fretboard diagram will already be in the key signature.

SETTING THE NOTATION KEY SETS SUGGESTED BACKING TRACKS

Also, whatever you set the notation key to be will determine the suggested backing tracks shown just below the Tab/Staff area where it says “Try Tracks:” followed by suggested tracks to try behind your riff. If the fretboard note display doesn’t match the notation key, those suggestions will be ALL WRONG!

There you have it! Setting the Notation Key.
